The Brief – Food Labelling and Balanced Diets

  • You have been asked by the Head of your school to organise an end of term meal for all sixth form leavers of whom you are one and recruit six of your friends to sit on a school committee group, which you will chair.
  • You, as chairperson of the committee, are accountable to the Home Economics Teacher.  However, he/she has asked an officer from the Local Trading Standards Department to help you with any queries you may have regarding food hygiene, healthy eating and nutrition.
  • Your aim is to choose a healthy balanced nutritious meal and ensure that all students’ dietary requests are taken into consideration.  You have allocated a series of tasks to each member of the committee group in order to get the job done properly.
  • Today, you have called a meeting and have asked each committee member to report back to you as to how they are getting on with their allocated task and it is their opportunity to raise any issues/questions they have concerning their allotted task.
  • Each student’s dilemma/questions will arrive as a message in your inbox approximately every five to ten minutes – so work quickly – and remember – we are watching you.
  • To find out how you should respond to each students dilemma/questions, you should research your answers by clicking on the various links (e.g, “What is my role in this scenario?” )
  • You will then need to let “talkingshop” Head Office know how you are going to respond to each student. “Talkingshop” Head Office is your teams “expert” who will help you through this scenario.  Your expert is a Trading Standards Officer who deals with these sorts of issues on a daily basis. All the answers to each student’s dilemma are within the relevant links so do not expect your “expert” to give you the answers. You will need to send a response for each student’s dilemma to your “expert” by clicking on “New” and typing a message to your expert.
  • Please remember to start your response off with the relevant key word that you will be given in each message (e.g. label). If you get stuck and need help from the "talkingshop" Head Office (your “expert”), then you can use one of your three lifelines. You use a lifeline in the same way as you send an answer – by writing a message in the purple message box. Start your message with the word "LIFELINE". "Talkingshop" Head Office will get back to you as soon as possible with a response to your query. This may take a few minutes so don’t hang around. Get on with dealing with another student or doing some more research.
  • Always think of the moral and legal implications when submitting your answers.
